Im still nursing my first baby and we found out im pregnant again, kind of a surprise. Somewhere i read something linking breastfeeding to ectopic and now im worried unnecessarily. Has anyone heard about this connection?
They're not linked. Breastfeeding can delay your periods and lower chances of conceiving, but it doesn't decide where a pregnancy implants. Don't worry on that count.
No, breastfeeding itself doesn't cause an ectopic pregnancy. My doctor explained ectopic happens when a fertilised egg settles outside the uterus, unrelated to nursing. Breastfeeding can reduce fertility a bit but that's a different thing entirely.
Having had an ectopic myself, I can tell you it's not caused by breastfeeding. Things like past tube issues or infections raise the risk. If you ever get a positive test with one sided pain, go to the doctor immediately, that part is important.
Short answer no. The two aren't related. If you're worried because of a specific symptom or history though, a quick chat with your gynac will put your mind fully at ease.
