Can hypothyroidism cause weight gain in pregnancy?
I have thyroid since before and on medication for it. Now in pregnancy my weight is going up quite fast and im wondering if the thyroid is adding to it. Any other thyroid mommas here who noticed this?
It can, but if your thyroid is being treated and levels are in check, it's usually not a big deal. The main thing is taking your tablet properly and doing the tests on time. Dont skip the thyroid blood work, that's what keeps it in control.
Yes it can play a role, i had hypothyroidism through my pregnancy. The key is keeping the thyroid well managed with regular tests and the right dose, my doctor checked my levels every few weeks. Once it was controlled my weight gain stayed in the normal range. Regular follow up is everything with thyroid.
I have hormonal issues myself so i totally get the worry around weight. Thyroid does affect metabolism and weight, but i'd never self judge it, levels need testing. Please keep your thyroid checks regular and let your doctor adjust things, dont compare your weight to others.
My gynac and endocrinologist both said uncontrolled hypothyroidism can contribute to extra weight gain and tiredness. That's exactly why they monitor TSH closely in pregnancy and adjust the medicine. With proper control it's well managed. So the answer is yes, but it's very manageable when tracked.
