My mom made sundakai (turkey berry) curry and said its good for digestion. But im pregnant 3 months now so not sure if its fine to eat. Anyone from south side had this during pregnancy?
In our family, we always make sundakkai vathal kuzhambu for pregnant women to keep their iron levels up. My doctor also agreed that cooked turkey berry is great for health, but cautioned me not to have it raw or in excess. It's safe and very comforting with hot rice and ghee.
Yes, turkey berry (or sundakkai) is highly nutritious and very rich in iron, which helps prevent anemia. Just make sure it is completely cooked or dried properly before eating, and consume it in moderate quantities. Never eat them raw, and always wash them thoroughly.
Honestly, dried sundakkai vathal cooked in kuzhambu is amazing and completely safe to eat once in a while. It’s a very simple and cheap way to boost your iron levels during pregnancy. Just don't overeat it, keep it to normal kitchen portions, and you're good to go.
During my pregnancy, I had low hemoglobin, and my mother-in-law used to give me well-cooked sundakkai to help boost it. It really helped me recover post my C-section as well. Just make sure it’s cooked thoroughly so it doesn’t upset your stomach.
Listen, there’s no need to fear turkey berry. It is an excellent traditional food for pregnancy, but like everything, eat it in moderation. Cook it well in a nice gravy or dry-fry the vathal with a little ghee. Don't eat it daily, maybe once or twice a week is more than enough.
