Can metformin cause false positive pregnancy test?
Im on metformin for pcos and got a faint positive line, but my period feels like its coming. Now im not sure if its real or because of the medicine. Has anyone on metformin dealt with this confusion?
I dont think metformin causes a false positive, it doesnt mess with the pregnancy hormone. If you got a positive it might actually be real. Best is to retest and then get a proper blood test done to be totally sure.
From what i understand metformin doesnt cause false positives. False positives are rare and usually due to other reasons or faulty tests. The cleanest way to know for sure is a blood test at the lab, i would suggest that over second guessing.
I have been on metformin for PCOS for years and it never caused a false positive for me. Generally it doesnt affect the test that way. But since PCOS itself can cause irregular cycles and confusion, i would do a blood test through your doctor to be sure.
When i asked my doctor about this, she said metformin itself doesnt typically cause a false positive, the test detects the pregnancy hormone which metformin doesnt produce. If you are getting a positive its worth confirming with a blood beta hcg test for clarity.
