Can pregnancy test be done before period time?

I'm really anxious to know if I'm pregnant, but my period isn't due for a few more days. Can I take a pregnancy test now, or is it too early to get an accurate result?

I panicked and tested 5 days early, got a negative, and cried. But when I tested again after missing my period, it was a clear positive! So don't worry if it's negative early on.
