I love running and used to do it regularly before I found out I was pregnant. Now I'm worried if running can cause a miscarriage in early pregnancy. Should I stop exercising completely?
Unless your doctor has specifically put you on bed rest, normal light running or jogging doesn't cause miscarriage. The baby is very well cushioned inside. Just don't overexert yourself and keep your heart rate in check.
I was extremely careful and avoided running completely, choosing gentle walks instead. My recovery after my C-section was smooth because I kept active but in a very low-impact way. It is better to stick to brisk walking in early pregnancy to avoid any accidental falls.
I completely understand why you'd worry about this, I was literally scared of even walking fast in my first trimester! It's natural to feel anxious, but please know that moderate activity is usually safe. Just talk to your gynac to get that reassurance so you can sleep peacefully.
Running? At this point in my third trimester, I can barely run to the washroom! But honestly, in early pregnancy, mild jogging is fine if you're used to it, though my gynac told me to stick to walks just to be safe. Don't push your body too hard.
Generally, if your body was already used to running before pregnancy, light jogging is fine, but starting heavy running suddenly isn't recommended. Miscarriages in the first trimester are usually due to chromosomal issues, not light exercise. Still, it's best to discuss your routine with your doctor first.
With twins, running was out of the question because I felt like a heavy penguin early on! If you run, just listen to your body—if you feel tired or dizzy, stop immediately. Pregnancy is a marathon anyway, no need to sprint through it!
