I'm in my third trimester now and really craving a cup of chai. My family keeps telling me to avoid it, but I miss my evening tea. Will drinking tea affect my pregnancy at this stage?
Having too much tea can affect iron absorption, which isn't great when you are trying to stay active. I limited myself to just one small cup a day, followed by my regular evening prenatal walks.
My MIL always said too much tea causes acidity and heat in the body during the final months. She used to make me light ginger-elaichi chai but restricted it to just once a day.
Oh god, I completely stopped tea in my third trimester because I read caffeine makes the baby hyper and can cause low birth weight! It is so stressful to decide, but maybe keep it to half a cup just to be safe?
A cup of light tea is fine, but make sure not to have it close to your thyroid or iron medication as caffeine can block absorption. Keep getting your monthly blood tests done to stay on track.
Because of my high risk pregnancy, my doctor advised keeping caffeine to a bare minimum. It is honestly best to ask your gynac how much caffeine is safe for your specific case.
If you are having tea, make sure you don't load it with sugar, especially in the third trimester when sugar levels can easily spike. I had to strictly monitor my diet and cut down sweet chai completely.
