Simply put, the sperm meets the egg around ovulation, fertilises it, and that then implants in the uterus. After implantation the pregnancy hormone rises and that is what a test picks up. Timing around your fertile days is what matters most when trying.
Basically egg release happens roughly mid cycle, sperm fertilises it, and it travels down to settle in the uterus. The days around ovulation are the prime time. If you want exact details for your cycle, your gynac can guide you nicely.
