I love fish and eat it quite often but read somewhere about mercury being harmful in pregnancy. Now im a bit scared. How much is actually too much? Im 4 months along.
My doctor didnt give me a number, she just said avoid high mercury fish like shark, swordfish, king mackerel and limit big tuna. Smaller fish in normal amounts is okay she said. Its more about which fish than counting mercury yourself.
You cant really measure mercury at home, so the practical thing is just avoid the big predatory fish and stick to smaller ones a couple times a week. Thats what I did. If youre worried about a specific exposure, tell your doctor.
If you think you had a real mercury exposure, dont guess the amount, please go talk to your doctor directly. For diet, just cut out the high mercury fish to be safe. Better cautious than sorry in pregnancy.
Theres no easy at home figure for this. The safe approach is limiting high mercury seafood and choosing low mercury options. For anything specific, your gynac is the right person to ask.
