How much weight is safe to carry during pregnancy?
I sometimes need to lift things around the house, like grocery bags or my toddler. I'm worried about straining myself. How much weight is generally considered safe to lift or carry during pregnancy?
My doctor advised me not to lift anything heavier than 10-12 pounds (about 5 kg) during pregnancy to prevent back strain and abdominal pressure. They also researched that repetitive heavy lifting can increase the risk of preterm labor. So, please use proper lifting posture by bending your knees if you absolutely have to carry something.
Don't try to be a superhero right now. Avoid lifting heavy gas cylinders, buckets, or big suitcases completely. If you must lift light bags, bend your knees instead of putting pressure on your back. Keep it under 5-7 kg and let others do the heavy work.
In my experience, carrying even slightly heavy grocery bags used to give me backaches and mild pelvic pressure. I made it a rule to never lift anything heavier than a small bag of vegetables. Please listen to your body and avoid lifting anything heavy from the floor.
Having had a PCOS history, I was always extra cautious and avoided lifting anything heavier than a bucket of water. It's better not to be overconfident during these months. Try to limit carrying weights to under 5 kgs and always ask family members for help.
When my morning sickness was at its peak, I felt so weak that lifting even a small water bottle felt hard! Practically speaking, you should avoid lifting heavy things like loaded laundry baskets or furniture. Just take it easy, do small household chores, and let your body rest.
