For my first scan it was done over the belly, they put a cold gel and moved a probe around. I felt so emotional seeing the little heartbeat on screen honestly. Early on some do it internally, but mostly its on the tummy.
Very simple process ma, just lie down and they do it in a few minutes. My mother in law was worried it harms baby but doctor assured us ultrasound is completely safe. Nothing to fear at all.
