How to avoid chromosomal abnormalities in pregnancy?
There's a family history of some genetic issue on my husband's side so this is constantly on my mind. We are planning soon. Is there anything we can do beforehand or during to lower the chances?
Honestly a lot of it is not in our control, so dont blame yourself. What helps is folic acid, avoiding smoking alcohol, and doing the recommended screening scans. Talk to your gynac about which tests suit your age and history.
My doctor said you cant fully prevent these as many are random, but you can lower risk and detect early. She had me take folic acid before conceiving and do the screening tests like NT scan and double marker. Early prenatal care is the main thing she stressed.
We did genetic counselling before trying and it gave us a lot of clarity. If you have any family history, that chat with a specialist really helps. Be gentle with yourself, you are doing everything you can.
Take your folic acid, go for your scans on time, eat well and rest. Beyond that, dont let fear eat you up. Your doctor will guide the screening and most pregnancies turn out perfectly fine.
