I'm pregnant and trying to understand how to calculate my pregnancy months. Can anyone explain how to count pregnancy months, especially in Telugu? It would be very helpful.
I used trackers which showed weeks, but for family I had to say it in Telugu months. Basically, 1-4 weeks is 'modati nela', 5-8 is 'rendava nela' and so on. Apps make it much easier to track both!
While elders count by 'Nelalu' (months), medical science always tracks by weeks because development is weekly. 4 weeks is roughly 1 month, so 40 weeks is 10 lunar months. Just use a standard chart to translate it for family.
In Telugu, we say 'Nelalu'. My MIL always counted from the last period date and would say '5th month nadustundi' (5th month is running). It's best to follow weeks as the doctor says, but for elders, normal calendar months are fine.
It is quite simple once you get the hang of it. Each month is 'nela'—for example, 1st month is 'okato nela', 9th is 'tommido nela'. I kept a simple chart to explain to my Telugu-speaking family while following weeks for my gynac.
Actually I also got so confused about how my elders count months in Telugu! My MIL says 'naalugo nela' but my app shows different weeks. How exactly do we match weeks to months?
My doctor explained that calendar months are slightly longer than 4 weeks, so 9 months actually equals 40 weeks. In Telugu culture, they start celebrating 'Seemantham' around the 7th (yedo) or 9th (tommido) nela. Keep both weeks and months in mind.
