My last report showed my hemoglobin is on the lower side and doc told me to improve it. I want to add the right foods to my diet, especially our regular tamil dishes. Amma is also asking, so pls share what worked for you.
Naan keerai (greens), beetroot, dates, pomegranate ellam saaptaen during pregnancy to keep blood up, my amma always insisted on these. Iron rich foods with a bit of vitamin C (like lemon) help absorption. But if your doctor gave iron tablets, take those regularly also, food alone may not be enough.
Beta, in our homes we give pala keerai (spinach), beetroot, kovakkai, dates and nellikai for blood. These are good and natural. But anaemia in pregnancy is serious na, so please take the iron medicine your doctor gives also, dont depend only on food.
Along with good food like greens, beetroot and dates, please get your hemoglobin checked regularly. I had to keep up with my reports for thyroid anyway, and they tracked my blood levels too. Food helps but the doctor needs to monitor and adjust your iron, so dont skip those visits.
My doctor said for haemoglobin, eat iron rich foods like spinach, dal, jaggery, dates, ragi and have them with vitamin C foods for better absorption, and avoid tea/coffee right after meals as it blocks iron. But she stressed the prescribed iron tablets matter most, so combine both and keep checking your hb.
