How to know if you have diabetes during pregnancy?
My test is coming up soon and im a little worried since diabetes runs in my family. Not really sure what signs to even look out for. Can u share what u noticed or how it got detected?
Actually, my doctor explained that gestational diabetes often has no clear symptoms at all, which is why they routinely do the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) between 24 and 28 weeks. You have to drink a very sweet glucose liquid and give blood samples at intervals to get an accurate diagnosis.
Having PCOS put me at a higher risk for gestational diabetes, so I was very cautious and requested early screening. If you have symptoms like extreme fatigue or constant thirst, it's always best to ask your doctor for a blood sugar test instead of trying to guess.
I completely panicked when I had constant thirst and thought I had gestational diabetes, but my glucose test actually came out perfectly normal! Sometimes our bodies just need more water during pregnancy. Definitely get the standard GTT test done to clear your mind.
Hey, don't stress too much about this! Most hospitals will automatically make you do a glucose tolerance test around your second trimester anyway. Just follow your doctor's schedule, eat balanced meals, and don't worry unless the lab reports show something.
Gestational diabetes is diagnosed through specific clinical screenings like the OGTT, as physical symptoms can easily be confused with normal pregnancy changes. It's highly recommended to consult your gynecologist, who will schedule the appropriate blood sugar tests based on your risk factors.
For me, I didn't feel any different at all, but my routine 6th-month blood test showed my sugar levels were slightly high. I just followed the diet my doctor gave me and avoided sweet things completely. I didn't try to guess it from symptoms.
I am in my 32nd week now and that glucose test syrup is literally the sweetest, most terrible thing I've had to drink! But joking aside, that test is the only real way to know if you have it. Ask your doctor about booking it so you can get it over with.
