I just delivered recently, and in my 5th month, sleeping on the left side with a soft pillow tucked under my tummy was the only way I could get some rest. If you accidentally roll onto your back at night, don't panic, just gently turn back to your left side when you wake up. It gets easier as you adjust to the bump!
Since I had a PCOS history, I was extremely cautious about every little detail, including my sleep posture. Sleeping on the left side is indeed the safest option to ensure optimal blood flow. Just take it easy, support your back with a pillow, and don't worry if you find it hard to get comfortable initially.
My doctor explained that sleeping on your left side is the best position during the second trimester as it improves blood circulation to the placenta and kidneys. She advised putting a pillow between the knees and behind the back for support. Avoid sleeping flat on your back from the 5th month onwards as it can compress major blood vessels.
Please don't waste 2000 rupees on fancy pregnancy pillows online; normal home pillows work just fine for left-side sleeping. Better to save that money for your upcoming anomaly scan and pediatric deposit at the hospital. Just tuck a regular pillow under your knees and sleep comfortably.
Beta, always sleep on your left side, it is very good for the baby's health and digestion. Drink a cup of warm milk with a little cardamon (elaichi) before sleeping to calm your mind and body. Avoid drinking too much water right before sleeping so you don't have to keep getting up.
Sleeping on your left side is best, but you don't need to buy those expensive C-shaped pregnancy pillows. Just use your regular bed pillows—place one under your belly and another between your knees. It works perfectly fine and gives amazing support without costing a rupee.
