My gynac wants me to keep an eye on my sugar levels at home now. I've never used a glucometer before so feeling a bit lost about when and how to check. Any tips from someone who's done this?
My gynac did the OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test) in the second trimester as routine. They take fasting blood first, then after the glucose drink. She explained it catches gestational diabetes early so it can be managed.
It is a standard test in pregnancy, dont worry about it. The lab gives you the glucose drink and takes blood a couple times. Just go fasting as they tell you, that is the only prep.
The GTT was part of my routine package so it didnt cost extra for me. If your hospital charges separately, ask in advance. A home glucometer is a one time buy if your doctor wants you monitoring at home.
I had GD so I know this well. The main test is the GTT, where they give you a glucose drink and check blood at intervals, usually around the 24-28 week mark. After diagnosis I also used a home glucometer to check fasting and after meals, but only as my doctor guided.
