Someone suggested cod liver oil for baby brain development, but I am already taking prenatal vitamins. I dont want to add supplements without proper advice. Has anyone discussed this with gynac?
I didnt take cod liver oil in pregnancy, my prenatal already covered what I needed. For omega-3 my doctor gave a separate safe one. Dont mix random supplements yourself, show your gynac your prenatal and let her decide.
Please dont start cod liver oil on your own. I read that it can be high in vitamin A which needs caution in pregnancy, so it is really a doctor's call. In my case they were strict about any extra supplements. Ask your gynac before taking it.
I looked into this and the concern is that cod liver oil has a lot of vitamin A, too much of which isnt advised in pregnancy. Omega-3 yes is good, but the form and dose matter. So I left this decision to my doctor instead of buying it myself, and I'd suggest the same.
My doctor specifically said avoid cod liver oil as a self supplement because of its high vitamin A, and instead she gave me a pregnancy safe omega-3 if needed. So dont just pick it off the shelf. Tell your gynac what you want and let her recommend the right one.
