I might need an MRI for an old back issue and the doctor mentioned they may use some contrast dye. Now im a bit scared because im 16 weeks pregnant. Anyone got one done during pregnancy, was it okay?
This is strictly a doctor decision, please dont go by internet answers for something like contrast. Make sure you inform both the gynac and the scan center that you are pregnant. They will choose the safest option for you and the baby.
A plain MRI without contrast is generally considered safe when needed, but the contrast dye is usually avoided in pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Doctors weigh the benefit against any risk for that. Please dont decide this yourself, the radiologist and your gynac will guide it.
My doctor told me MRI itself doesnt use radiation so it is preferred over CT in pregnancy, but the gadolinium contrast is typically avoided unless there is a strong medical reason. They only use it if the benefit clearly outweighs the risk. Always tell the team you are pregnant before any scan.
