I picked up a sugar free chewing gum and it has sorbitol written on the back. Im 14 weeks and now im second guessing if i should chew it. anyone checked with their gynac about this?
Sorbitol is often in protein bars and sugar-free snacks, but it can mess up your digestion. I checked with my gynac about my fitness snacks, and she suggested avoiding too many sugar alcohols. Try to stick to whole foods and simple walks to keep your digestion active!
I had to track every single sweetener because of GD, and honestly, sorbitol can cause major bloating and even gas. While it's technically okay in small quantities, it's much better to stick to natural sweeteners or ask your dietitian once.
Sorbitol can definitely cause stomach upset and bloating, so I always preferred natural sweeteners like dates or a little organic jaggery. If you are having severe stomach pain or diarrhea, please don't ignore it and consult your gynac immediately.
Oh my god, I used to read the back of every single pack to check for sorbitol and got so stressed! It is generally safe in small amounts, but too much can cause diarrhea, which is not good during pregnancy. Maybe just check with your doc to be 100% sure?
I have been reading up a lot about this since we are trying, and many articles say a little bit is fine. But since our bodies are so sensitive right now, maybe it's better to stick to natural things just to be safe?
I completely understand why you're worried about this, even tiny ingredients make us panic during pregnancy. Sorbitol in small amounts in food is usually okay, but too much can upset your stomach. Just try to avoid artificial stuff for your peace of mind.
Sorbitol is in so many sugar-free things, but let me tell you, it can give you terrible gas! Carrying twins, my stomach was already a warzone, so I avoided it just to save myself from the bloating. Better to eat a small piece of normal jaggery instead!
