I regularly practice Surya Namaskar and want to continue my yoga routine during pregnancy. Is it safe to perform Surya Namaskar while pregnant, or should I modify it?
Surya Namaskar involves deep bends and lying on the stomach, which isn't safe as pregnancy progresses. I specifically asked the prenatal yoga instructor at my hospital, and they designed a customized routine for me. Please consult your gynac or the hospital's physiotherapist before trying any such yoga.
I have heard that some steps of Surya Namaskar are quite intense and might put pressure on the lower abdomen. It's probably better to avoid it or do very gentle stretches instead. Maybe ask a doctor or a proper trainer to be safe.
Please be very careful and avoid Surya Namaskar. Because of my past loss, my doctor strictly told me to avoid any strenuous stretching or bending. It is just not worth the risk, so please consult your doctor first before starting any physical activity.
When I had severe morning sickness, I couldn't even stand up properly, let alone do Surya Namaskar! If you are feeling active, that's great, but avoid backward/forward bends and lying on your tummy. Stick to simple walks and light breathing exercises, it's much safer.
I used to do it regularly, but my doctor advised me to stop during pregnancy because of the stretching and pressure. Especially since I had thyroid issues, she wanted me to stick to simple walks and regular check-ups. Definitely ask your gynac during your next visit.
