I saw a video about birth defects and now I am unnecessarily scared, yaar. My anomaly scan is still a few weeks away and I keep thinking about what causes such things. Did anyone else get anxious before scans?
From what I understand it forms very early in pregnancy and causes range from genetic to environmental, like certain drugs or deficiencies. Many cases just happen with no fault of the mother. Your doctor is the best person to explain the risk factors for your situation.
Its often a mix of factors and honestly sometimes no clear reason at all, so please dont blame yourself if youre worried. Taking your folic acid and avoiding smoking and alcohol lowers the chance. If you have any family history, do mention it to your gynac so they can guide you.
I know reading about these things can make you anxious, I was the same after my IVF. From what my doctor shared, the causes are often beyond our control, a mix of genes and early factors. Take your supplements, follow your doctor, and try to keep your mind calm, ok.
My doctor explained cleft lip happens in early development when the parts of the lip dont fully join, and the exact cause isnt always known. It can be genetics, certain medicines, smoking, alcohol or low folic acid. Thats one big reason they push folic acid before and in early pregnancy.
