My sister in laws baby got jaundice right after birth and now im a little scared since im due next month. Just trying to understand why it happens, is it something we do during pregnancy or just normal in newborns? Pls share if u went through this.
Most newborns get a bit of yellow tinge, its so common dont panic. Its usually the baby's liver still settling in. The hospital checks it and treats if its high, you will be guided properly.
Just to clear, baby jaundice mostly shows up after birth not during pregnancy. My baby got it day 3, doc said its because the liver is still maturing and very common in newborns. Little sunlight and feeding well, it settled fast.
Our pediatrician explained newborn jaundice happens because the baby breaks down extra red blood cells and the immature liver cant clear the bilirubin quickly. Sometimes blood group mismatch between mom and baby adds to it. They monitor levels and treat with light if needed.
My first had high jaundice and needed phototherapy for couple days, it looked scary but they handled it well. The main thing is regular feeding and letting the doctor check bilirubin levels. Dont try home remedies blindly for this, get it monitored.
