My ankles look swollen by night and the word oedema came up when I searched. I am going to mention it in my appointment, but I want to understand why it happens. Did swelling start suddenly for anyone?
Normal mild swelling in legs is common, but please note this carefully. If you get sudden swelling in face or hands, or with headache and blurry vision, that can be a BP issue and you must call your doctor right away. Dont ignore that kind, ok.
My ankles puffed up a lot in the last months. My mother told me to rest with legs raised and avoid too much salty food, and it did help. But my doctor also kept checking my BP each visit because of the swelling, so do keep your appointments regular.
Swelling in pregnancy is usually from extra fluid your body holds and the growing uterus pressing on veins, slowing blood flow from the legs. Mild swelling in feet and ankles, especially evening time, is normal. Keep feet up, dont sit too long, drink water.
As a working mom sitting at a desk all day, my feet would swell up by evening. Its mostly the fluid retention and circulation. I started keeping a small stool under my desk to raise my feet and took short walks every hour, made a real difference.
My gynac said the body makes more blood and fluid in pregnancy and the heavier uterus presses on the big vein, so fluid pools in legs. Heat and standing long makes it worse. She told me normal puffiness is fine, but sudden severe swelling needs a BP check, so keep that in mind.
