What happens if i sleep on my back during pregnancy?
Im in my 6th month and i keep waking up flat on my back, dont even realise it in sleep. My MIL keeps saying dont sleep like that, side pe so. Is it actually harmful or just an old saying? thoda confused honestly.
It's completely normal to worry about these things. While sleeping on your back isn't ideal later in pregnancy due to blood flow, don't stress if you accidentally wake up that way. Just gently shift to your side. My gynac always emphasized comfort and side sleeping, especially left side. You'll get used to it.
Ugh, tell me about it! I used to wake up panicking like 'oh no, did I just crush my baby?' lol. It's actually not good coz it puts pressure on a main vein. But honestly, sometimes sleep is sleep, right? Just try to adjust when you can.
So, the main concern is that your uterus puts pressure on a big vein called the vena cava, which carries blood back to your heart. This can reduce blood flow for both you and the baby. It's not like one time will cause big problems, but consistently, it's not ideal. Try to use pillows to keep you on your side, even if you shift in sleep.
Avoid it completely after first trimester. Sleeping on your back can restrict blood flow to the baby and make you feel dizzy. Best is to sleep on your left side. Use a pillow between your knees and under your bump for support. It helps a lot.
My MIL always said don't sleep on your back after 4-5 months. Actually, I used to put a long pillow behind me so even if I rolled, I'd stay tilted. Or sometimes just a regular pillow tucked under one side of my back helps too. It's all about finding what's comfy for you na.
