My gynac mentioned edema at my last visit when she saw my feet and i just nodded but didnt fully understand what she meant. My ankles do look a bit puffy by evening. Can someone explain in simple words what this actually is?
Edema is basically swelling, mostly in feet, ankles and hands, from the extra fluid your body holds in pregnancy. My doc said mild swelling is normal especially later on. But she told me to report it immediately if it comes suddenly with headache, blurred vision or swelling in the face, coz that can mean BP issue.
By evening my feet would balloon up after a full work day. I started keeping a small stool under my desk to raise my legs and it helped. If yours is sudden or one leg only though, tell your doctor.
Swelling in feet is what they call edema, my amma used to make me soak feet in warm water and rest. It's common in the last months. But my gynac was clear, if face or hands swell suddenly, dont wait, call her.
It's the puffiness in your legs and feet, totally common in later months. Keep feet up when you sit, dont stand too long, drink water. But sudden facial swelling is not the normal kind, get that checked fast.
My swelling turned out linked to high BP so I am extra careful telling people this. Mild puffy feet is usually okay, but if it comes fast with headache or you feel unwell, please get your BP checked the same day.
