My scan report keeps mentioning AFI with some number and I have no clue what it means. Im 28 weeks and dont want to keep googling and scaring myself. Can someone explain in simple words what this is?
I saw AFI written on my scan report and got nervous not knowing what it meant. The doctor said it just measures the water around the baby. Did others also have this checked at every scan?
It is the amniotic fluid index, basically how much fluid surrounds the baby. They monitor it especially in the third trimester. If it is in the normal range you have nothing to worry about, your gynac will tell you if anything needs attention.
AFI stands for amniotic fluid index, it is the measure of the fluid around the baby that they check on a scan. My doctor said it tells them if the fluid levels are normal, too low or too high. She kept an eye on mine in the later scans, it is a routine thing.
