My doctor mentioned some radiology test and i just nodded but actually didnt fully get what it means. Is it the same as ultrasound or something different? trying to understand before my next visit, thoda confused.
My doctor explained radiology in pregnancy mostly refers to the sonography scans, like the dating scan, the anomaly scan around 18 to 20 weeks, and growth scans later. These use sound waves not radiation so they are safe. She said proper X-rays or CT are only done in emergencies with shielding.
I got confused by this word too at first and worried it meant radiation. But the lady at the centre said it is just the scan machine, no harm to baby. Did anyone else feel nervous before their first scan?
At my hospital the radiology dept is just where they do all the sonography. I always asked the technician to explain what they were checking, they were happy to. Just clear your doubts with them, they do this all day.
Radiology basically means imaging tests like ultrasound scans that check baby growth and position. Ultrasound is the safe and main one used in pregnancy. Things like X-ray are usually avoided unless really needed, and your doctor decides that.
