Im 39 weeks and at my last visit my gynac mentioned she might do a membrane stripping next time to help things along. I just nodded but had no idea what it actually is. Has anyone had this done?
It is a small thing doctors do close to the end to nudge labour along, dont let the name scare you. There can be mild cramping after which is normal. Just let your doctor decide if and when its needed.
I didnt have this since I ended up with a c-section, but my friend did near her due date. From what she said it is something the doctor does to encourage labour to start. Definitely a procedure only for the gynac to do, not anything at home.
My doctor explained it as a membrane sweep done near the due date to help kickstart labour naturally. She does it during an internal exam by gently separating the membranes. She said it can cause a little spotting or cramps after, which is normal, but only the doctor should do it.
