My gynac mentioned prolactin levels during my last visit and i didnt fully understand what she meant. I know it has something to do with milk but does it do other things in pregnancy too? Just curious to understand my own body better.
My doctor explained prolactin is the hormone that prepares your breasts to make milk. It rises through the pregnancy so that after delivery your milk supply comes in. Quite important for feeding the baby later.
From what I read, it supports milk production and also plays a part in the pregnancy itself. If you are asking because of a test result though, better to discuss the actual number with your gynac.
Its basically the milk hormone. During pregnancy it gets your body ready, and after birth when baby suckles it keeps the milk flowing. I really understood its job once I started nursing.
Just adding, in some women prolactin can be high even otherwise, I had it checked before conceiving. During pregnancy its supposed to be high though, thats its normal role for milk. Doctor is the best to interpret your levels.
