My 6 week scan report mentioned yolk sac seen, but fetal pole not clear yet. Doctor said repeat scan after some days, still I am anxious. What does yolk sac mean in early scan?
My doctor explained it nicely, the yolk sac is the first structure seen in the early scan, it gives nutrition to the baby before the placenta forms. Seeing it on the scan is actually a good early sign. After some weeks placenta takes over and the sac slowly disappears.
I remember asking the sonologist the same thing at my 6 week scan. She said its like the baby's early lunchbox, feeds it till placenta comes. I was so relieved when she said it being there is normal and healthy. Did anyone else feel super nervous at that first scan?
Nothing to worry about, its a totally normal part of early pregnancy. It shows up before the heartbeat sometimes and that's fine. Just let ur doctor track the scans, they know what they're looking for.
In my IVF journey the yolk sac was the first thing they looked for around 5-6 weeks, before the heartbeat. It was such an emotional moment seeing it. Your doctor monitors its size and it's an early reassurance the pregnancy is progressing.
