Reading up a lot these days and came across this about the cervix and got curious how it all works through the months. Im early in my first trimester. If anyone understands this better, would love a simple explanation.
The cervix actually stays closed and forms a mucus plug soon after conception to protect the baby, and it stays closed until near labour. It only starts to open and soften when your body prepares for delivery. Your doctor checks this in later visits.
My doctor explained the cervix remains firm and closed through most of pregnancy and a mucus plug seals it early on. It begins to thin and dilate close to your due date. If you have any concern like a short cervix, the gynac monitors it on scans.
This is something your gynac watches, especially if there is any history of early opening. In my case they checked cervix length on scan. If you have any spotting or pressure, please get it checked rather than worrying yourself.
