Im 36 weeks now and my due date is getting closer, getting a bit anxious about the whole labour process. Trying to understand when the cervix actually starts opening up. Will ask my doc at next checkup but wanted to hear from you all too.
Beta the mouth of the uterus stays shut almost the whole time and opens only when baby is ready to come. My doctor checked it in the last weeks. Nothing to worry before that, it's how the body protects baby.
Usually only at the time of labour. But there's a thing called incompetent cervix where it can open too early, that's what I had, and they put a stitch to hold it. If you've had a loss before or any concern, please get your cervix checked by your gynac.
Normally the cervix stays closed and firm the whole pregnancy and only starts opening near the end when labour begins. With my second it started dilating only in the last days. So through pregnancy it's meant to stay shut, that's the safe thing.
My doctor explained the cervix stays closed and only begins to dilate as you approach delivery, going from 0 to 10 cm in labour. During pregnancy they sometimes measure cervical length on scan to make sure it isnt shortening too soon.
