Im around 8 weeks now and reading a lot about how the baby gets nutrition. Got curious when exactly the placenta starts forming and takes over. Anyone knows the rough timeline?
I had the same question at my 12 week scan. Doctor told me placenta is doing its work now and i felt so relieved honestly. Did anyone else feel less sick once placenta took over?
It forms gradually in the early weeks and is properly working by around the third month. My gynac explained it nicely during my checkup. Your doctor will track its growth in each scan, so no need to worry about timing.
It begins developing soon after you conceive but becomes fully functional by about 12 to 13 weeks. That is also why many feel a bit more settled in second trimester. Your scans will show its position too.
From what my doctor told me, the placenta starts forming very early, right after implantation in the first few weeks. But it fully takes over nourishing the baby around the end of first trimester, roughly 12 weeks. Before that the yolk sac does the job.
