Best is the day after your missed period, using first morning urine for the clearest result. Testing too early can show a false negative. If it's negative but period still doesnt come, retest in a few days.
I always tested first thing in the morning before the day got busy, that's when it's most accurate. Wait at least till the missed period. Saves you the confusion of faint early lines, trust me.
