When is safe to have intercourse during pregnancy?
My husband and I are wondering about intimacy during this time. When is it generally considered safe to have intercourse throughout pregnancy, and are there any times to be more cautious?
If your routine checkups and thyroid levels are normal and doctor gives a go-ahead, then second trimester is usually fine. Just keep attending your regular follow-ups and ask your gynac during the scan reports.
It’s completely understandable to feel nervous about this, I felt the same fear of hurting the baby. Generally, the second trimester is considered the safest and most comfortable. Just make sure you are emotionally ready too, don't force yourself.
Having gone through a loss, we chose to completely avoid intercourse throughout the pregnancy just for our peace of mind. If you feel any anxiety or have a history of complications, please consult your gynac first before taking any step.
Twin pregnancy is a different ball game altogether, my doctor put a complete ban on intercourse early on because of the high risk of preterm labor. So if you are carrying twins, definitely ask your doctor first! Otherwise, normal single pregnancy is usually fine in the middle months.
Honestly, in the first trimester you are too tired/puking, and in the third, you feel like a heavy balloon, so second trimester is the sweet spot! Just clear it with your doc first. Though now with a newborn, sleep is the only thing on my mind, haha.
Please do not take any chances and ask your doctor. If there is even a small issue like low placenta or previous spotting, intercourse is not safe at all. For me, doc advised strict bed rest and no intimacy.
For IVF pregnancies, we tend to be extra cautious and doctors often advise avoiding it in the first trimester or sometimes entirely. Please discuss your specific medical history with your fertility specialist or gynac to make sure both you and the baby are safe.
I stayed at my maternal home during most of my pregnancy so we had a natural break, but my mom always said to be very careful and gentle. Just ask your doctor in your monthly checkup to be absolutely sure.
