When should you have ultrasounds during pregnancy?
First pregnancy and bit confused about the scan schedule. Already had one early dating scan. Just want to understand at which weeks the main ultrasounds usually come. How was your timeline?
My doctor's standard plan was a dating scan around 6-8 weeks, the NT scan at 11-13 weeks, the anomaly scan around 18-20 weeks, and a growth scan in the third trimester. She added extra if needed. But your doctor decides based on your case.
There are a few key ones across the trimesters, your gynac will tell you exact dates at each visit. Best not to over scan or under scan, just follow her schedule. That's what worked smoothly for me.
I just had my anomaly scan around 20 weeks, it was the detailed one. Before that I had the dating and NT ones. My doctor literally writes the next scan date each visit so I dont have to track, maybe ask yours to do same.
Usually first one early to confirm and date the pregnancy, then the big one around 5 months for baby's organs, and one near the end for growth and position. Doctor will schedule as per you, dont go doing extra on your own.
There are about 3 to 4 main scans usually so I budgeted for those. I asked my doctor upfront how many to expect so there were no surprises in cost. Helps to plan.
