Im 36 weeks now and getting closer to my due date. I keep hearing about cervix opening and dilation but honestly dont fully get when it starts happening. Can someone explain how it works?
Relax, in most pregnancies it opens only when labour starts. The doctors keep an eye on it during checkups, so you don't have to monitor anything yourself.
For me the cervix really started opening only when labour began near the due date, thats the normal time. They check the dilation in those last hours. Before that it stays closed to keep baby safe inside.
Mine started opening early and I needed extra care for it, so I'd say take any early signs seriously. Normally it opens at labour, but if you feel pressure, cramps or any leaking before time, call your doctor right away dont wait.
My doctor explained the cervix normally stays firm and closed through pregnancy and only opens during labour at full term. Sometimes in some women it can start early, which they call incompetent cervix, and thats why they check it in scans. Yours will be monitored at routine visits.
I keep worrying about this honestly. So it stays closed till labour right? I read about early opening and got scared. Did your doctor check your cervix length in the scan too?
