When to stop taking folic acid tablets in pregnancy?
Im taking folic acid since before i even conceived. Now im in 2nd trimester and just wondering till when do we continue it? do we stop at some point or take whole pregnancy? bit confused, didnt ask doc properly.
Hello! Usually, gynacs stop it after the first trimester and start other vitamins. But some multi-vitamins still have folic acid in them. Just ask your doctor at your next appointment.
Oh, I was so worried about stopping it too early! Usually, doctors advise taking it till the end of the first trimester, but some suggest continuing longer. Please don't stop without asking your doctor first.
Generally, folic acid is crucial for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy to prevent birth defects. After that, your doctor will usually switch you to iron and calcium supplements.
I totally panicked when my doctor asked me to stop it at 12 weeks, thinking it would harm the baby! But it is completely normal to stop it then as the main development is done.
I am currently taking it daily while trying to conceive, as my doctor recommended. It is safe to continue until your gynac tells you to switch to other supplements during your pregnancy.
Folic acid is so important for the baby's development. Please follow your doctor's instructions exactly and do not stop taking them on your own, as every pregnancy is unique and needs proper medical guidance.
