I think it was first used around 1956 or 1958 in Glasgow. During my first trimester, when I was throwing up literally everything, going for the ultrasound and seeing the baby was the only thing that kept me going. It's such a lifesaver tech.
It started around the late 1950s but my MIL always says that in their time during the 80s, scans were not this common. They only did it if there was some issue. Now we get to see the baby so many times, it's a blessing!
