Im in my third trimester now and my gynac mentioned something about dilation last visit. I didnt fully understand when this opening actually starts happening. Can someone explain in simple words?
I was confused about this too! So the uterus mouth stays closed almost the whole time and only opens near delivery right? I kept thinking it opens early and got scared. Anyone else thought the same in 2nd trimester?
If you mean the cervix opening, that happens at the end, during labour when baby is ready to come. For me it started dilating only once labour pains began near my due date. Before that it stays closed to keep baby safe.
Normally it opens only at labour. But in some cases the cervix can open too early (incompetent cervix) which needs medical attention. If you ever feel pressure, cramping or any leaking before time, please call your doctor right away, dont wait.
My gynac explained the cervix (mouth of uterus) stays shut through pregnancy and only opens during labour, dilating up to about 10 cm for delivery. In the last weeks they sometimes check if it has started softening. So it's a late-stage thing, not during the months before.
