I am currently trying to conceive and trying to eat healthier. I read that cooked moong sprouts are very good for folic acid, but I'm a bit nervous about eating them raw. Do we always have to steam them?
Since I had major complications in my first trimester, my doctor put me on a very strict diet. She strictly advised against raw sprouts because of infection risks. Please consult your gynac before adding any homemade sprouts to your daily diet.
I'm planning to conceive soon and preparing my diet chart. Are alfalfa or clover sprouts also safe if cooked, or should we stick to traditional moong and kala chana?
I was so terrified of food poisoning during my pregnancy that I avoided sprouts completely for the first few months! Later, my doc said boiled moong is perfectly fine. Just make sure you wash them multiple times and boil them really well, please don't take any risk with raw ones.
Never eat raw sprouts during pregnancy, period. The risk of bacterial contamination is too high. Steamed moong or chana sprouts are great for protein, but make sure they are thoroughly cooked.
From what my husband always tells his patients, cooked moong and chickpea sprouts are excellent sources of protein and fiber. However, raw sprouts can harbor harmful bacteria like Salmonella. So, always steam or boil them before consuming.
