I was on a bp medicine before conceiving and my doctor immediately changed it once I told her im pregnant. She mentioned it was an ARB and not safe now. Im just trying to understand why these are a no-no, anyone know?
Short version, ARBs can cause harm to the growing baby so they are stopped during pregnancy. If you planned a pregnancy while on them, this should be discussed with your doctor early. They will guide the safe substitute, dont self adjust.
My doctor explained ARBs (and ACE inhibitors) can harm the baby's kidney development and cause problems, so they stop them in pregnancy. If you were on BP meds before, they usually switch you to a pregnancy safe alternative. Never stop or change on your own, let the doctor adjust it.
Im not a doctor so I wont explain the science fully, but I do know these BP meds are not given in pregnancy because of risk to the baby. The safe route is your doctor switching you to something approved. Please raise this with them right away.
This is a serious one, ARBs are avoided because they can affect the baby badly especially in later trimesters. If you are taking any BP medicine, please tell your gynac immediately so they can change it safely. Dont just stop it yourself either, get proper guidance.
