My doctor started me on folic acid right from the first visit and i just take it without really knowing why. Im in my first trimester. Just curious what exactly it does for the baby, anyone know?
Its basically the most important early supplement for the baby's development, especially the spine and brain. Both times my gynac started me on it right away. Just take it daily as prescribed, dont skip it.
My doctor explained folic acid is mainly to help prevent neural tube defects in the baby's brain and spine, and its most important in the early weeks. She actually wanted me to start it even before conceiving. Thats why its the very first thing they prescribe.
I read that we should start folic acid even while trying, so I just began mine. Good to know exactly why now. Thanks for asking this, it helped me understand its importance.
