Everyone at home told me to completely stop papaya the moment they heard im pregnant. I love it so im a bit sad lol but also want to understand the actual reason behind this. Is it all papaya or only the raw one?
Beta, we always avoided raw or unripe papaya in pregnancy, elders say it can cause heat and contractions. Ripe one in small amount some say is fine, but to be safe most of us just skip it those 9 months.
It's the unripe green papaya that's the real worry, that enzyme can cause contractions. I just avoided papaya completely both times, why take the risk when there are so many other fruits. Simple.
My doc said it's mainly raw/green papaya that's the concern, it has a substance (latex/papain) that can trigger uterine contractions. Fully ripe papaya in small amounts is usually considered safer, but many avoid it altogether out of caution.
In my family raw papaya was a strict no during pregnancy, passed down advice. I followed it. But i also asked my doctor and she said avoid unripe one mainly. So i just skipped all papaya to be at peace.
