I've been taking spirulina as a health supplement, but now I'm pregnant, and I'm hearing mixed opinions. Why is spirulina sometimes considered bad or advised against during pregnancy?
Why take unnecessary risks with packaged powders like spirulina? Instead of these expensive supplements, just focus on a simple diet of green leafy veggies, dal, and fresh fruits. It is much safer and easier to manage at home.
Honestly, spirulina isn't regulated well and can contain microcystins which are toxic for the liver and the baby. Skip the superfood trends during pregnancy. Stick to clean, whole foods and the iron/folic acid tablets your gynac gives.
Personally, my doctor told me to avoid spirulina and other algae supplements because they aren't strictly regulated. I stuck to the regular prenatal vitamins she prescribed. It is always safer to stick to what the doctor recommends.
I totally understand you want the absolute best nutrition for your little one right now. But some of these natural supplements can have heavy metals, which might not be safe. Please just check with your doctor once, your baby’s safety is the most important.
Please avoid taking such supplements without asking your doctor. Spirulina can sometimes be contaminated with heavy metals or harmful toxins which can be dangerous for the baby. I always preferred to stay away from any herbal powders during my pregnancy.
