My gynac added a thyroid test in my first checkup and it made me a little anxious. I have no symptoms or anything but why is it such a big deal during pregnancy? trying to understand.
My gynac said thyroid hormones are crucial for the baby in the first trimester when the baby cant make its own yet. Both underactive and overactive thyroid can cause issues if not controlled, which is why they test it early and monitor it.
Thyroid and pregnancy are closely linked, I learnt that with my pcos history where doctors always check it. Im no expert but I know keeping it in range matters for the baby. Definitely get it tested and follow what your doctor says.
Take this one seriously. Mine was untreated for a while and it caused complications, after that they monitored it closely. If you have thyroid history tell your doctor right at the start and keep up with the blood tests.
I had thyroid through my whole pregnancy so I learnt this well. It affects the babys brain development especially early on, and untreated it can cause problems. My doctor adjusted my dose and tested me every few weeks, please dont skip those follow ups.
Its one of the routine tests for a reason. The thyroid controls so much, including the babys growth and development. If yours is off they manage it with medication and regular checks, very common and totally controllable.
