Everyone at home told me to completely stop papaya the moment they heard im pregnant. I used to eat it daily for digestion so now im worried na. Can someone explain whats actually the reason behind this?
Its the raw/green papaya that's the real concern, not so much fully ripe. Both my pregnancies I just kept papaya off the list to avoid overthinking. Plenty other fruits to enjoy na.
I asked my doctor this exact thing. She said unripe papaya has a substance that can trigger the uterus, so avoid raw papaya. Fully ripe papaya in moderation she didnt object to, but said if unsure just skip it. Best confirm with your own gynac.
Our family always said no to papaya during pregnancy, especially the unripe one. I followed it more out of respect and caution. If you really love it, just check once with your gynac before having any.
Beta the issue is mostly with raw or half ripe papaya, elders always warn against it because it is said to bring on contractions. Ripe papaya in small amount many say is okay, but during pregnancy I'd just avoid the green one fully to be safe.
After my earlier loss I became very careful and papaya was one thing I completely avoided, raw or ripe, just for my own peace. Maybe overcautious but I didnt want to take chances. Do what feels safe for you and ask your doctor.
