Why tetracyclines are contraindicated in pregnancy?
I had a doctor mention this once and it stuck with me. Now that im pregnant im trying to understand which antibiotic groups are a no and why exactly tetracyclines are avoided. just want to be informed before any prescription.
From what I understand they can affect the baby's developing teeth and bones, so doctors avoid them in pregnancy. There are safer antibiotics they give instead. Never take any antibiotic without your gynac prescribing it.
The simple takeaway is dont take any antibiotic on your own in pregnancy. Even for a small infection, let the gynac choose the safe one. I always told every doctor I was pregnant before taking anything.
My doc explained tetracyclines can cause discoloration of the baby's teeth and affect bone growth, thats why they are avoided. She said always tell any doctor you are pregnant before they prescribe anything. They have safe alternatives.
