Will my belly button piercing close during pregnancy?
I have a belly button piercing that I love, but my belly is growing now. I'm worried it might close up or cause issues as my pregnancy progresses. What usually happens to belly button piercings during pregnancy?
Honestly, just take it out. Metal rings are a hazard when your skin stretches, and they can catch on maternity clothes. If the hole closes, so what? You can easily get it done again once you have the baby, right now focus on keeping your stretching skin moisturized.
Actually, my pregnancy app had a whole article on this! It recommended removing metal rings around week 20 to prevent stretching and infections. If you really want to keep the hole open, you can buy those flexible, extra-long pregnancy plastic retainers online.
I have a belly piercing too and I often wonder about this while we are trying to conceive. My sister told me she had to remove hers in her second trimester because the skin stretches so much. I guess it's better to remove it and let it close if needed, for safety.
Oh, I panicked so much thinking my belly button piercing would close up and leave a weird scar! I took it out in my 5th month, and even though the hole shrunk a bit, it didn't completely close. Honestly, once your belly goes back to normal post-delivery, you can easily slide a ring back in!
With my previous experiences, I learned that keeping ourselves comfortable and safe from any infection is the most important thing. As the stomach expands, the piercing can get irritated or tear, which is not safe. It's much better to remove it and focus on your health, a piercing can always be redone later.
Look, you will have to take it out anyway by the 5th or 6th month because your belly will stretch and it will get super uncomfortable against your clothes. If it closes, you can easily get it repierced later. Don't waste time worrying about this right now, just prioritize comfort.
